Umah was a supporting character in Blood Omen 2. She was a member of the Cabal, acting as both a guide and a friend to Kain. She narrated a tutorial for Kain (and thereby the player) at the beginning of the game in the context of reminding him of his vampiric abilities, and introducing him to Meridian.[1][2] Umah was voiced by Liz Ward-Land.

BiographyEdit

As with all vampires of this era, Umah was likely sired by Vorador at some point in the Post-Blood Omen era, though it seems unlikely she was a participant in Kain's vampire army and was probably turned later. At the beginning of Blood Omen 2, Kain awoke from a 200-year coma in a building in the Slums, and was greeted by Cabal Vampire Umah.[3][4] She informed him of developments in Nosgoth since his defeat by the Sarafan Lord,[5][6][7] and requested his help against the Lord on behalf of the Cabal.[8][9][10][11][12]

BO2-Kain meets Umah

Kain and Umah's first meeting

Umah took Kain to feed[13] and train in Chapter 1: the Slums - as Kain's memory had been affected by his long slumber - Umah reminded him of his vampiric abilities, and introduced him to Meridian's dangers.[14] In her opening 'tutorial', Umah taught Kain about the Whisper,[15][16] Basic Jumping,[17] Floating,[18] Feeding, Blood and Lore,[19] Water weaknesses,[20] Basic Combat[21][22] and Kain's Dark Gifts[23] -Fury [BO2][24] and Mist;[25] she also introduced Kain to his first Lore coffers[26] Ward gates,[27] Glyph magic applications[28][29] and Glyphwrights.[30] Once Kain had been trained, Umah tried to take Kain to the Lower City to Sanctuary to meet the leader of the Cabal,[31] but as they attempted to cross a bridge[32] they were spotted by a Glyph Guard who raised a Ward Gate separating the pair.[33]

Umah

With the main route to Sanctuary blocked, Umah advised Kain to seek out the Smuggler's Tunnel that would take him to the Lower City[34] and sent him to seek out a Cabal Contact at the Grand Hotel [35] who was able to direct him to the Smuggler's Den [BO2].[36][37] When Kain arrived in the Den in Chapter 2, Umah whispered to him[38] sending him to speak with a Cabal Contact in the Tavern [39], who was able to direct Kain to the Smuggler's Tunnel[40]. As Kain arrived in the Lower City in Chapter 3, he was met by Umah, who congratulated him on his progress. Having been given orders to investigate the Industrial Quarter,[41][42][43] Umah did not take Kain to Sanctuary personally, instead sending him to other Cabal Contacts the Tapster [44][45][46] and the Vendor who was able to direct Kain there.[47]

BO2-Cabal Vamp Umah

Whilst she was investigating the Main Factory of the Industrial Quarter along with another cabal vampire, Umah discovered a chamber where a portal to a strange location was being held open by a single object - the Nexus Stone.[48] Before she could relay this information to her accomplice, she was captured by Sarafan knights and the other heavily injured Vampire, was forced to flee. Upon his arrival at Sanctuary, Kain 's meeting with Vorador was interrupted by the injured vampire, who told them that the Sarafan had taken Umah to the Sarafan Keep for execution.[49]

Sent to rescue Umah,[50][51] Kain infiltrated the fortress[52] with the aid of the Bishop of Meridian[53][54] and learning that Umah was held among the rooftop towers[55][56] Kain was able to find and release Umah from her Ward-Gated prison,[57][58] but as he did so the pair were confronted by the Sarafan Lord and only narrowly avoided death thanks to a spell Umah used to bring them back to Sanctuary.[59][60] In Sanctuary, Umah told Vorador of her discovery[48] and learning of the power of the Nexus Stone to negate the power of the Soul Reaver [61], Kain traveled to the Industrial Quarter to retrieve it, leaving the injured Umah at Sanctuary[62][63]

Umah-NexusStone

Umah was again present at Sanctuary after Kain had recovered the Nexus Stone at the end of Chapter 6: The Industrial Quarter [64] and she remained at Sanctuary (apparently due to her injuries) as Kain was sent to the Canyons seeking the Seer [BO2]. With Kain gone for some time in his quest to destroy the Device, Umah openly worried, wishing that she had been sent along with Kain.[65] When Kain returned, along with Janos Audron, they highlighted the risk posed by the Hylden Gate and Umah was able to confirm that many of the ships in the Wharves were taking the same secret course out of the harbor; a likely candidate for the Hylden City.[66] With Kain sent to investigate the Wharves and board a ship to the Hylden City to deactivate the Shield Generator, Umah insisted that she be sent along with Kain this time.[67][68][69]

BO2-TW-UmahDeath2

Umah and Kain traveled to the Wharves in Chapter 10 [70][71][72] and at the entrance to the Wharves[71] Umah described their objectives and the dangers they would face, but Kain's arrogance cause Umah to question Kain about the future of the Cabalvampires [73] after the Sarafan were put down. Fearing his ambition and his plans for the Cabal,[74] she stole the Nexus Stone [73] and ran off into the Wharves,[74][75] intending to destroy the Sarafan Lord herself.[74] Soon after however, Kain found her in the Wharves badly wounded from an encounter with several Sarafan Knights. Killing the last knight, Kain confronted Umah. As she lay dying, Umah asked Kain to save her with his blood, but Kain taunted her, recovering the Nexus Stone and getting her to admit that she saw he was the rightful ruler of Nosgoth, before he refused to save her and personally killed her for her betrayal.[76][77]

Umahs death

When Kain finally deactivated the Hylden Shield Generator in Chapter 11: the Hylden City and Janos and Vorador teleported to the Hylden City, the subject of the fate or Umah became a major dispute between Vorador and Kain,[78][79][80] which the Sarafan Lord was able to exploit, to injure Janos and Vorador with Reaver bolts[BO2]. When he finally confronted the Sarafan Lord, Kain angrily blamed the Sarafan Lord for Umah's betrayal, regarding her as his "latest spy", a claim denied by the Sarafan Lord.[81] In the game's closing scene Kain reflected on Umah's claims that his rule would not differ from that of the Sarafan Lord.[82]

  • Umah's name is re-iterated in debug messages[BO2].
  • Umah is noted as a lieutenant of the Cabal[1][2] and like many of the vampires of this era, she appears to have been turned by Vorador,[83] directly addressing him as "sire".[67] The paternal nature of their relationship is apparent throughout Blood Omen 2 as Vorador seems notably protective of Umah.[50][65] and is appropriately outraged by her murder at Kain's hands.[80]
  • Umah is credited as Kain's "guide and friend",[1][2] but their relationship notably develops some romantic elements[BO2]; with Kain lamenting as she died that she "could have been [his] queen".[76] Kain does seem somewhat disturbed by Umah's betrayal, first accusing Vorador,[80] then the Sarafan Lord of causing her to turn against him.[81] Ultimately, Kain still seems to regret her death in the epilogue;[82] and this is even more apparent in an alternate epilogue present in the games files [84]
  • Like many of the Cabal Vampires, though it is likely she was sired by Vorador, Umah's exact origins are unknown and it is even unclear when Umah was turned. Upon meeting her after his revival, Kain acknowledges that as their first meeting, suggesting that she was not a part of Kain's vampire army.[3] However a short while later (after only minor training activities) Umah seems to imply a previous meeting "work[ing] together" with Kain.[45] It is possible, given Kain's shattered memory at the start of Blood Omen 2, that he may have forgotten Umah;[4] or as hinted by Defiance cut content, there may have been a previous meeting between the two, probably involving the elder Kain[85] (see below).
  • Umah's Dark Gift is never specified and it is unclear what her abilities were; she is shown to possess at least an extended Jump  [BO2]and stage directions highlight her "blinding speed"[73] (a similarly named Dark Gift, "speed" was originally intended to appear as Sebastian's Dark Gift, but was replaced by Berserk[86]). She also demonstrates the ability to Teleport.[BO2]

  • Original Blood Omen 2 scripts depict Kain kissing Umah before killing her and further lamenting her betrayal and death in a different epilogue (also included in game files) - this epilogue was intended to feature a flashback of Kain disposing of Umah's body by dissolving it in water.[87]
  • Umah was originally intended to appear in Defiance as a Human vampire worshipper (possibly similar to the Priestess) but her part of the storyline was cut. Artwork by Defiance artist Daniel Cabuco shows Umah in a Purple/Pink Robe/Dress with a large cowl. Umah is depicted with her facial tattoos and her attire contains a symbol which resembles Vorador's, perhaps suggesting a long-standing relationship between the two before she was turned. It is unknown what time period this would have taken place in.[85]
