The Sluagh of Defiance were a Sluagh variant enemy encountered by Raziel in Legacy of Kain: Defiance.

Profile[]

Sluagh were the scavengers of the Spectral Realm, where they could often be found feeding on lost Souls. Sluagh were arguably the most basic and common enemy variant encountered in Defiance, present in both eras in a variety of locations, although confined to the Spectral Realm. The Sluagh were green-skinned bipedal humanoids with large eyes that glowed yellow. They bore a strong resemblance to the previous Lesser Sluagh from Soul Reaver and Soul Reaver 2, although they were much more deformed and mutated with larger eye and a more hunced bestail appearance. As with other Sluagh variants, the Sluagh could recover from damage by consuming lost souls and even other vulnerable Sluagh - when defeated the Sluagh would become transparent and flee and at this time they could then be consumed as a regular soul.[Defiance][Defiance manual][Defiance strategy guide]

In combat, Sluagh were some of the most agile and evasive of the enemies encountered by Raziel and they were proficient at dodging and claw lunges. They were also however some of the weakest enemies and were able to withstand little damage. Sluagh would often attack in packs to overwhelm and corner their prey. The Defiance Sluagh were confident in combat and would confront Raziel even when alone, only retreating when defeated; after which time they could still recover by consuming souls or the remains of other defeated Sluagh, leading to many situations when multiple defeated would consume each other to return to continue the fight.[Defiance][Defiance manual][Defiance strategy guide]

Sluagh were first encountered in the Underworld in Escape from the Elder God Chamber as Raziel explored the area in the events of Blood Omen and could be found throughout Nosgoth present in the Spectral Realm in virtually all locations.[Defiance][Defiance strategy guide]

Notes[]

  • The Sluagh are labelled as "sluagh" in game files.[Defiance]
  • The Sluagh are mythologically derived from the restless spirits of the same name present in Irish and Scottish folklore.
  • Like the later areas of Soul Reaver 2 areas that are not intended for Raziel to visit in the final games (such as the Sarafan Stronghold) are noticeably absent of Sluagh and other Spectral fauna.
  • In contrast to Soul Reaver 2, Defiance features only a single Sluagh variant, with the Greater sluagh now absent. Arguably their place is taken by other Spectral Realm enemies such as the Archons and the crab-like Dreadnaught archons particularly.
