Chapter 3: Nupraptor is the third "level", or chapter, of Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. It pursues Kain's quest to track down and kill the first member of the Circle of Nine - Nupraptor, the Guardian of the Pillar of the Mind.

PlotEdit

When Ariel was murdered in the pre-Blood Omen era, her lover Nupraptor realized that a traitor within the Circle itself was responsible for this brutal deed. Overcome with grief and a lust for vengeance, he turned his powers against his peers, driving the minds of the Circle members into dementia. This corruption of the Pillars was almost irrevocable - only when all the currently-serving Pillar Guardians were destroyed could Nosgoth be redeemed. Kain was charged with killing these sorcerers, and returning their Pillar tokens; only when all of the Pillars were restored, Ariel told him, would his curse end.[BO1-C3][1]

Kain travels north towards Nupraptor's Retreat, honing his new powers as a vampire, and offering cynical commentary on the human towns of Nachtholm and Steinchencröe. In Steinchencröe, he encounters Irmok the Mad, a so-called lunatic who advises him to disguise his presence. With this counsel in mind, Kain enters a Gypsy camp, and obtains a human guise. This enables him to avoid detection when passing through the city of Vasserbünde, whose inhabitants express their dismay at Nupraptor's sadistic activities.[BO1-C3][1][BO1-Misc]

Entering the Retreat, Kain reflects on the folly of the pilgrims who traveled to this fortress in search of the renowned Mentalist's wisdom. He comes upon a catatonic serving girl, who explains that Nupraptor sewed his eyes and lips shut to deny the outside world, driven to insanity and self-pity by the loss of his beloved Ariel. Unimpressed by this, Kain makes it to the sorcerer's inner sanctum, and finds that the wraith, Malek, is there to defend Nupraptor from attack.[BO1-C3][1]

Believing that Malek will inevitably fail him, Nupraptor dismisses the Paladin, and confronts Kain alone. After a brief battle, Kain prevails in beheading the Mind Guardian, and returns his severed head to the Pillars. It dissolves into the stone of the Pillar of the Mind, resulting in its restoration. Though triumphant, Kain recognizes that he cannot expect further successes as long as Malek remains active to defend the remaining Guardians - thus, he proclaims the Sarafan warrior his next target.[BO1-C3][1]

Dialogue: The Pillars of NosgothEdit

Kain (V.O.): Nupraptor, with his blind act of vengeance, threatened to destroy all of Nosgoth.
Each Circle member was bonded to the Pillar he served. The Pillars reflected the mental state of their servants, and as the minds of the Circle degenerated and descended farther into dementia, the Pillars crumbled.
To restore them, each member of the Circle had to die, and the artifact that served as their link to the Pillar had to be returned.
Only when all the Pillars were restored, did Ariel claim my curse would end. And so my hunt for Nupraptor began.
[Kain examines each Pillar:]
Kain: The Pillar of the Mind.
Kain: The Pillar of Dimension.
Kain: The Pillar of Conflict.
Kain: The Pillar of Nature.
Kain: The Pillar of Balance.
Kain: The Pillar of Energy.
Kain: The Pillar of Time.
Kain: The Pillar of States.
Kain: The Pillar of Death.

Dialogue: The region west of the PillarsEdit

[Kain finds a bat beacon:]
Kain (V.O.): These beacons serve as landmarks during my flights in bat form. Once I have committed their locations to memory, I can always return.

Dialogue: NachtholmEdit

[Examining a sign reading "Nachtholm":]
Kain (V.O.): The village of Nachtholm was typical of Nosgoth peasantry. It admits the farmers and smithies of the quiet country life, proud brigands and cutpurses.

Dialogue: SteinchencröeEdit

[As Kain reads the entrance sign, he comments to himself:]
Kain (V.O.): The town of Steinchencröe bore with it the infamous aroma of its inhabitants. In life, I would not have graced the place with my presence. In death, I merely added to the stench.
[Inside the town he discovers an old man, madly stirring a pot:]
Kain (V.O.): This lunatic was delighted to see me. Perhaps his madness would reveal a greater truth...
Irmok: The bastards in Steinchencröe shun me as Nosgoth shuns them! I know what it means to be an outsider, vampire. I fear you not, but remember this – there are others who will speak to you, so long as you know how to look.

Dialogue: VasserbündeEdit

[Kain approaches a Gypsy encampment, settled directly south to the entrance of Vasserbünde:]
Kain (V.O.): The gypsies – purveyors of distrust and superstition. Most of their babble should be taken with a pinch of salt, since the gypsies often tinker with weary travelers' minds... However, a few gypsies have something interesting to say.
[Reading the entrance sign of Vasserbünde:]
Kain (V.O.): Vasserbünde lay, its glory now stained and faded, a faithful child in the looming shadow of Nupraptor's Retreat.
[Observing Nupraptor's Retreat:]
Kain (V.O.): Nupraptor's Keep lay west of Vasserbünde. I would seek to cut the cancer from its heart.

Dialogue: Nupraptor's RetreatEdit

[As Kain crosses the bridge out of Vasserbünde towards Nupraptor's:]
Kain (V.O.): The wind carried screams from the west. I couldn't help but smile: someone else in this world was suffering more than I.
[Passing through the main gate leading to Nupraptor's Keep:]
Kain (V.O.): The gaping maw of Nupraptor's Retreat rained upon Nosgoth all his pain and misery. The disease begged to be cleansed.
[Upon entering Nupraptor's Retreat:]
Kain (V.O.): The Mentalist Nupraptor was renowned through Nosgoth for his tricks of the mind, telepathy and telekinesis. Pilgrims traveled from all across the land seeking the comfort of his lies. I sought not his wisdom but his life.
[Nupraptor taunts Kain remotely:]
Nupraptor: You dare intrude upon my sanctuary? Can I not mourn in peace?
Leave... leave and let my solitude be complete...
[Kain discovers a chained girl:]
Kain (V.O.): I came upon one of Nupraptor's serving girls, catatonic with fear, choking out half-words through bloodied, broken teeth. Although tempted by hunger, I stayed my hand, allowing her to tell her story...
She spoke of her Lord Nupraptor, driven to insanity by the brutal slaying of his beloved Ariel. She spoke of his self-mutilation, sewing his eyes and lips shut to deny the outside world. Fueled by despair and hopelessness, he turned his magic on the Circle, infecting their minds with his madness. Nupraptor cared for nothing now, save his pathetic self-pity.
Scars such as hers would never heal. Death would only be a mercy.
[Kain discovers a room full of carnage:]
Kain (V.O.): The cretin squandered life and left it seeping on the floor. Such waste was a travesty. Perhaps Nupraptor needed to be taught a lesson as to the value of blood.
[Kain looks out one of the Retreat's "eye sockets":]
Kain (V.O.): From the depths of the Retreat's eye sockets, I viewed Nosgoth in a different fashion. The glass seemed to warp the image and taint the color. As if Nosgoth needed assistance in making its corruption apparent.
[As Kain enters the heart of the Retreat and reaches Nupraptor, he finds that Malek is there as well:]
Nupraptor: So, Malek, have you come to fail the Circle once more? Leave, paladin! I do not need your protection. Come, Kain... come share my pain...
[Malek and Nupraptor disappear. Kain progresses, and confronts Nupraptor:]
Kain (V.O.): So this was the Mentalist Nupraptor, this broken, pathetic little man. Yet crippled as he was, he would not yield without battle. Very well, old fool. If it is death you seek, I will not deny you.
[Upon collecting Nupraptor's Head:]
Kain (V.O.): Perhaps the head of her beloved will convince Ariel that I have accomplished my task.

Dialogue: The Pillars of NosgothEdit

Kain (V.O.): I placed Nupraptor's head before the Pillar of the Mind, and watched on as it dissolved into the stone.
[The offering is placed:]
Kain (V.O.): The pillar accepted its offering, thus it was restored.
Kain (V.O.): Nupraptor was but the genesis – forever tainted by his madness, the Circle was beyond redemption. For them absolution lay only in death. In me, they would find their deliverance.
But first I had to defeat their shepherd – Malek, defender of the Nine, lay in a keep far to the north, past Vasserbünde. It was time for me to test the wrath of the Pillar of Conflict.
Ariel: Death in the Circle breathes life to the Pillars. For every Pillar, there is a token; only with these shall they be restored.
But to reach a warrior, you must first breach his ward. Find Malek and destroy him. Only then will the Circle fall.

NotesEdit

  • The dialogue transcripts used in this article are adapted from Tenaya's original transcript of Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain at Nosgothic Realm, and the pair of official Silicon Knights/Crystal Dynamics scripts hosted at The Lost Worlds as of 2012. As in the Nosgothic Realm transcript, some scene descriptions have had to be manually revised to reflect the finished product, but these edits are intended to be as slight as possible.[3][4]
