Lava in Turel's clan territory in the Soul Reaver alpha

Lava was a hazardous element present in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain and intended to appear in Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver

Profile[]

Lava was a dangerous terrain type present in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. Consisting of molten rock at high temperatures Lava is found in the Northern region of Dark Eden in Blood Omen . Unlike water, lava will cause damage when touched, crossed or jumped in any form.

Lava was initially intended to reappear in Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver and was notably seen in early images from Turel's Clan Territory. With that level being cut, lava ended up removed from the game

Behind the scenes[]

The Soul Reaver alphas publicised in 2020 did feature lava as part of Turel's Clan Territory. Two different types of lava were seen: the first was black with orange cracks and behaved as a solid; while the second was an orange steaming liquid which appeared to move and would partially submerge Raziel's ankles when jumped in.

Neither had any particular effect on Raziel's health, though this may merely not have been implemented at the time the alphas were created. Their positioning implied that the solid one was intended to be crossed, while the liquid one was intended to be avoided - a low ledge positioned alongside the liquid lava seemed to provide an escape if Raziel fell in.

Notes[]

  • As Raziel became immune to the effects of water after consuming Rahab´s soul, lava would provide a new obstacle he would have to avoid. It is unclear whether Raziel would be sent to the Spectral Realm immediately, or his health would drain if he would stand in a pool of lava - though the low escape ledge seemed to imply the latter.
  • Lava was seen in several early images for Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. It was also featured in a promotional capacity, with an advert for an early version of the official guide bearing a rendered image of Raziel standing nearby lava.
