The Elder God's platform featured in the Underworld area of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, at the bottom of the Lake of the Dead. It was a small raised surface, decorated with an eye sigil, upon which Raziel could stand to receive guidance from the Elder.

Profile[]

Raziel encountered the platform for the first time following his resurrection as a wraith, but it served no function at that point.[Soul Reaver/1] Later in his quest to destroy the vampires, the Council and Kain, however, it would become active, as signified by the three glowing, green orbs of energy at its base.[Soul Reaver] As soon as Raziel traversed his derelict clan territory and approached the Necropolis, it would adopt this visual cue, and was capable of being used.[Soul Reaver/3]

When Raziel stood on the platform for a moment, the Elder God would offer him one of the following hints, depending on how far he had progressed through Nosgoth:[Soul Reaver/Miscellaneous]

[After entering the Necropolis:]
Elder God: Beyond the ruins of your former stronghold, and above the gardens of the dead, your brother Melchiah waits...
[After defeating Melchiah:]
Elder God: Return to the Sanctuary of the Clans, Raziel. Melchiah's soul has endowed you with the means to gain entry.
Beware, however – this hollow derelict is abandoned, but not uninhabited...
[After defeating Kain at the Pillars of Nosgoth:]
Elder God: Seek out Zephon's lair, Raziel... beyond the ruins that greet your exit from the Underworld. Armed with the Soul Reaver, you may gain entry where your path was previously blocked.
[After defeating Zephon:]
Elder God: The canyons beyond the Pillars expose an ancient blasphemy. Having devoured Zephon's soul, you may now gain entrance where your path was formerly blocked.
[After defeating the Tomb Guardian:]
Elder God: North of the Sarafan Tomb, your brother Rahab has secluded himself and his progeny in the ruins of a half-drowned abbey.
[After defeating Rahab:]
Elder God: Beyond the maelstrom of the abyss, a subterranean tunnel leads northward, to the clan territory of your brother Dumah.
Endowed with Rahab's soul, you may swim to gain entry where your progress was previously impeded.
[After defeating Dumah:]
Elder God: In the furthermost canyon of Nosgoth's frozen wastes, the hushed silences embrace an ancient enigma. In the bowels of this labyrinth, your master awaits...

After obtaining the Wraith Blade, Raziel could also solicit advice from Ariel's platform at the Pillars of Nosgoth.[Soul Reaver/6] However, unlike Ariel, the Elder God would re-iterate his hints if Raziel stood on his platform again before leaving the chamber.[Soul Reaver]

The Elder's platform is absent from the alphas

The mechanic involving Ariel's and the Elder God's platforms was not present in the alpha builds of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver and was only added during the beta stage, presumably to help remind players where to go next to advance the story due to the absence of a world map or any other hint systems.[Soul Reaver] Soul Reaver 2 featured a world map which highlighted the next location to travel to, Blood Omen 2 was generally linear, and Legacy of Kain: Defiance's status screen granted textual hints indicating the player's current objective.[Soul Reaver 2][Blood Omen 2][Defiance]

Following the release of Soul Reaver 2, Legacy of Kain series director Amy Hennig mentioned in an interview that there is a connection between the Underworld, the Abyss/Lake of the Dead and the Lost City which appeared in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. She did not explain the nature of the connection.[1] Series artist and Legacy of Kain: Defiance art director Daniel Cabuco revealed, in 2012, his understanding of the link:

"As far as I can tell you, The Elder God was known for 'Pulling things down'. So the Lost City was pulled into the Abyss by the Elder God, as were many areas. (like the end citadel in Defiance) I don't really know what the direct connection was. The lost city probably had a backstory with the Elder God, allowing him purchase on that part of the world so he could pull it down into the depths of the world."
―Daniel Cabuco[2]

The Elder God's platform, therefore, may have been part of the Lost City before its destruction at the hands of the Elder God.[2]
