The ancient, primitive cult was a group of worshippers operating before Nosgoth's recorded history. They venerated the Elder God, and operated in what were, or what became, the Subterranean Ruins.

RoleEdit

The cult fashioned the enormous statue symbolically representative of the Elder in the caverns between the Subterranean Pillars Chamber and the Swamp.[1] This statue remained intact for hundreds of years at the least, and was encountered by Raziel as early as Nosgoth's early history and as late as the post-Blood Omen era. By then, the Ruins were fully submerged with water.[SR2]

It was not clear whether the cult was related to the Ancient Vampires or Moebius (fellow Elder God worshippers). Their race was unknown, and it is uncertain whether or not they survived into any of the eras explored by Kain and Raziel.[SR2][DEF]

BackgroundEdit

The cult has not appeared in the Legacy of Kain series, and is not mentioned in any of the games.[SR2][DEF][BO1][SR1][BO2] Its existence was only indicated in a questionnaire involving Chris Bruno and Amy Hennig. Asked as to the origin of the statue in the Subterranean Ruins, Bruno said "Amy told me it's simply a statue, a symbolic representation of the Elder God fashioned by an ancient, primitive cult".[1]

NotesEdit

  • Although the ancient cult has not yet made an appearance in the series, it may have been referenced. In Soul Reaver 2, the Elder God claims he has "many [good servants]", and in Legacy of Kain: Defiance, referring to the Spirit Forge, he tells Raziel that "this chamber [has been] made ready for my more malleable servants".[SR2-C2][DEF-C12] By the time both statements are made, the ancient vampires are apostates, and the Elder's only known active servants are Moebius, Raziel and the (mindless) Archons; if the Elder was being truthful, the plural nature of his comments means he must have had other, unseen servants in Nosgoth.[SR2-C3][DEF-C10][DEF-C2]
